Item description: * See scan - perfect condition. This is an original photo of a member of the Seaplane / Hydroplane Unit based in Varna. The unit was under German commandment for a very short period of time between 1916 and 1917 and after that it was all Bulgarian. The Seaplane unit had a very limited staff, so such a photograph image of a member with THE genuine uniform is extremely scarce. On top of his hat there is a banner saying Seaplane Station. After the Germans, the unit was attached to the Varna strong Point commandment. Only about 8 or so sea airplanes were based in this seaplane base and the staff was really extremely small. One can imagine how scarce it is to find such an item from this place. For me this is a true gem of world's aviation history.
Short history of the Seaplane air aviation / pilot unit:
01.02.1916 - Varna. A Seaplane / Hydroplane Station begins its activity.;
31.05.1917 - Varna. 1st Bulgarian combat mission of the Hydroplane / Seaplane Base (Station), attached to the Black Sea Marine Unit.;
13.09.1917 - Varna. Last combat mission of the Hydroplane Station of the Black Sea Marine Unit.
Scarce.
